Sequoia is Stanford’s cloud-based HR and Payroll system designed to consolidate core employee and manager workflows into a single, integrated platform. Through Sequoia, employees can complete routine HR and payroll activities in one place, including managing time card entries, absence requests and personal information, viewing employment information, payslips and tax documents, and completing performance-related processes.
Note that current students and postdocs continue to use Axess for maintaining personal information, including managing direct deposit payment methods.
Sequoia includes tiles to access historical (June 2026 and earlier) payslips and year-end tax documents, which remain available via Axess.
About
Time entry and absence requests
Time entry and absence requests are managed in two separate modules in Sequoia: Time Card and Absence.
- Non-exempt employees use the Sequoia Time Card to keep an accurate daily record of hours worked, including actual start and stop times and meal breaks. SLAC non-exempt employees report effort in conjunction with hours worked.
- Exempt employees use Sequoia when requesting absences or using time off, such as sick, personal time off (PTO), floating holiday, or vacation. SLAC exempt employees use the Sequoia Time Card to report effort.
- Employees who utilize a time clock to record their in and out times can see a view-only version of their time clock entries via the Sequoia Time Card. Time entered via the time clock will automatically interface to Sequoia for calculation and payment.
- Remote exempt and non-exempt employees use Sequoia Time Card to record an alternate tax location when they travel to work in California to allow for appropriate state taxation.
Pay
Employees use Sequoia to:
- Manage payment methods to enroll in, update, or cancel direct deposit. Students and postdocs use Axess for this task, with updates interfaced to Sequoia for direct deposit of pay.
- Access pay statements issued June 2026 and later. Axess remains the archive for statements issued June 2026 and earlier.
Tax
Employees use Sequoia to:
- Securely declare or update tax withholding elections for federal, regional (state), and local taxes.
- Access electronic W-2 and W-2c Forms issued for tax year 2026 and later. Axess remains the archive for historical records issued prior to June 2026.
- Manage document delivery preferences, including enrolling in online delivery for current and future tax forms.
- Obtain duplicate W-2 statements; former employees who no longer have system access should contact the Financial Support Center for assistance.
Access
Access to Sequoia is granted automatically when employees are hired.
