Create or Modify a Soft Budget in CMS

A CMS Soft Budget is a hypothetical budget you create for forecasting purposes. This page provides instructions of creating or modifying Soft Budget in CMS.

Create or Modify a Soft Budget in CMS

CMS Soft Budgets do not change the Hard Budget, which is the official budget for a PTA as recorded in the university budget systems (Tidemark and iBudgets).

  1. Enter ofweb.stanford.edu in the browser
  2. Click Login
  3. As prompted, log in using SUNet ID and password

  1. Click SU CMS USER

  1. Select Accounts tab
  2. Enter account (PTA) search criteria from the Account Balances screen
  3. Select Go – Execute Your Search

  1. Find PTA in search results
  2. Select Project-Task-Award link to access the Accounts Overview screen
  3. Select Add Soft Budget from the Account Overview screen
The Add Soft Budget tab will change to Edit Soft Budget if a Soft Budget has already been created for the PTA.
  4. Select a time Period from the list from either the Add Soft Budget or Edit Soft Budget screen
  5. Select Create Soft Budget
  6. Modify the amounts in the Soft Budget by Period column (these are duplicates of the Hard Budget until modified)
If you have a PTA with no Hard Budget, you must manually add lines and enter expenditure types and dollar amounts.
  7. Select Add Line to add expenditure types and Soft Budget amounts, or click Remove Line to delete lines previously added
  8. Select Save

CMS will not automatically generate Staff Benefits, Tuition Grant Program (TGP), Indirect Cost, or Infrastructure charges when you create or modify a Soft Budget for new employees. You must add Soft Budget amounts for each associated expenditure type.

What Happens Next?
  • You can now see the Soft Budget from the Account Overview screen and view uncommitted account balances with or without CMS Soft Budgets.
