Stanford Volume Software Licensing Agreements

The most notable volume licensing agreements at Stanford are the Microsoft Academic Select Program and the Adobe Contractual Licensing Program. Please refer to the Microsoft Software and Adobe Software overviews for more information on these specific volume licensing programs.

How Volume Software Licensing Works

In a volume licensing program, purchasing the license gives you the right to install and use the software. You need one license for each machine on which you install the software. (See the Microsoft and Adobe overviews for information on certain rights to install on a second machine.)

Pricing:  Under volume licensing programs, the price you pay to install the software per machine is based on the volume of installations that the university anticipates making over the period of the agreement. This means you pay the same discounted price per copy whether you purchase one copy or 100 copies of the software covered by the licensing agreement.

Installation:  In volume licensing, you can install the product by buying or borrowing a CD or DVD, or sometimes by downloading the product. The CD or DVD itself does not include the right to use the product; it is the purchase of the license which allows the use of the product. It is the department’s responsibility to keep track of the licenses they have purchased. The approved, paid PO is proof of licensing. You will not receive a physical copy of the license.
