Vision and Mission

The Controller's Office is a unit of the Business Affairs Office, whose vision is

“to work together to make administration seamless and efficient to enable and support teaching, learning and research.”

The Controller's Office, along with the other units in Business Affairs (which include: Administrative Systems (AS) and IT Services (ITS), Human Resources, Office of Research Administration, Risk Management, Business and Finance, and Internal Audit) works

“to provide integrated financial, technical, business and human resource services for the benefit of the Stanford Community.”

Controller's Office Functions and Responsibilities

The Controller's Office has five main functions:

  • Ensure proper internal controls and the safeguarding of University assets
  • Accurately record the University's assets, liabilities, funds, revenues and expenses in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, University policies, and donor requirements
  • Bill and collect tuition and other miscellaneous receivables
  • Process payments (including accounts payable, reimbursements and payroll) for students, vendors, faculty and staff
  • Provide financial information and analysis to support senior administration decisions and meet external reporting requirements such as the annual report and tax return. See the Bondholder Information web site, Financial menu option, for access to Annual Reports.

In performing these functions, the Controller's Office is responsible for:

  • Creating an environment that promotes innovative and sound business policies and practices that balance controls, compliance and customer service
  • Serving as Business Owner of financial systems, creating and maintaining administrative processes and systems throughout the University which promote the financial health of the University
  • Establishing and communicating accounting policy and procedures for the University
  • Coordinating with auditors and other financial professionals to ensure that the University’s accounting records meet audit requirements
  • Providing financial systems that deliver meaningful financial information.
